(THUNDER BAY, ON) On Wednesday, January 27, 2016 at approximately 6:26 pm, officers from the Thunder Bay Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), Kaministiquia Fire Department and Superior North Emergency Medical Service (EMS) responded to a three vehicle collision at the intersection of Highway 11/17 and Highway 102.
The driver of a 1998 Freightliner tractor trailer was west bound on Highway 11/17, at Sistonen’s Corner, when the driver of an east bound 2015 Peterbilt tractor trailer made a left turn in front of the Freightliner, onto Highway 102.
This caused the driver of the Freightliner tractor trailer to collide with the trailer portion of the Peterbilt.
The west bound Freightliner tractor trailer then collided head on with the driver of a third tractor trailer, an east bound 2016 Freightliner.
The driver and passenger of the westbound Freightliner tractor trailer were transported to hospital by ambulance with non-life threatening injuries.
There were no other injuries reported
Both Freightliner tractor trailers sustained extensive damage to the cab portion of the vehicles. The trailer portion of the Peterbilt sustained moderate damage.
The driver of the Peterbilt tractor trailer, a 40 year old male, from North Bay, was charged with Turn Not in Safety contrary to the Highway Traffic Act.
Highway 11/17 and Highway 102 was partially closed to traffic for approximately 3.5 hours as officers investigated the collision and completed the safe removal of all vehicles involved.
