With not one but two major eruptions on the Sun, a strong geomagnetic storm watch has been issued (Space weather prediction Center) and this could mean some great northern lights viewing in our region.

The high energy particles released from two eruptions from solar flares, the second of which was very large and directed towards earth are expected to arrive Friday/Saturday. The resulting interaction with the Earth’s magnetic field could bring the northern lights much further south than usual and us here in NW Ontario should be in a prime location. With clear and cool nights the show should be a good one.

The energy release may also affect radio communications and in some cases entire power grids (Quebec blackout 1989) .
