(THUNDER BAY, ON) – The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is urging all motorists using winter roads in northern Ontario to stay alert and travel safe. At this time of year, ice conditions can be unsafe and change quickly for unsuspecting drivers.
Please remember that when you are travelling between northern communities on winter roads, always let someone at each end of your travel know when you are leaving and when you are expected to arrive.
In case of problems, ensure that you pack the following survival equipment:
· Winter clothing and blankets
· Basic camping equipment
· Emergency food supplies
· Tools for vehicle repairs
· Seatbelt cutter, window breaker, satellite phone, CB radio or two-way radio.
Also remember that winter roads established for transportation of supplies into northern communities are considered “Highways” under the Highway Traffic Act. Therefore, if you plan to drive on “Highway” you need a valid driver’s licence, vehicle registration and plates for the vehicle you are operating and insurance for the vehicle you are operating.
Always keep in mind that driving is a privilege, not a right.
